What is a Psychiatric Assessment?

A psychiatric assessment is also known psych testing or psychological screening. This form of evaluation is typically conducted by a psychiatrist, but can also be a multi-disciplinary process facilitated by psychologists, social workers, or nurses.

The process of a psychiatric assessment includes the collection of data about a persons level of mental health functioning with the overall purpose of establishing a diagnosis. A psychiatric evaluation is similar in construct philosophically to a medical exam that results in a medical diagnosis.

A psych test is often the first stage of a treatment process. This does not mean that this type of evaluation is where treatment begins.
